Man Sets Foreclosed Home on Fire
July 20, 2011
An Orlando man, who set his foreclosed townhouse on fire when police officers arrived to serve him an eviction notice, was shot several times by police after a fight broke out.
According to the Pembroke Pines Police Department, the man refused to come out of his townhome when police arrived to serve him an eviction notice. Police then observed the man setting the house on fire. Witnesses say that the man reportedly put gasoline in his house and then set it on fire, burning out the windows and door.
The home owner, Allen Gauntlett, 52, had lost his home to foreclosure after owing $10,000 in homeowners’ dues and fees.
Gauntlett allegedly exited the home shortly after setting it ablaze and then got into a scuffle with police officers, which resulted in police shooting him several times. He was taken to the hospital, where he was last reported in stable condition.
The fire damage to the townhome was estimated to be more than $70,000.
