Last month, two listings made news when the sellers said they were willing to accept bitcoins. Now, a real estate firm is publicly announcing it'll accept the virtual currency too. Bond New York announced it will accept bitcoins as payment for real estate transactions, saying it is the first real estate firm in the U.S. to make such a declaration.
"We are accepting bitcoin as a service to our customers who prefer to use the digital currency as a matter of convenience,” says real estate professional Brian Dusseau of Bond New York. “We are always looking for ways to serve our customers through technological advancement. In addition, we have agents who would like to be paid in bitcoins if their customer pays us in bitcoins."
Bitcoin is a relatively new digital currency that has no central authority backing its value. A bitcoin currently is worth about $750, says Noah Freedman, co-founder of Bond New York.
"Bitcoin is a convenient and inexpensive way for our customers to transfer money; so we see it as a win-win situation which will impact the real estate industry,” says Freedman.
