15 Healthiest Cities in the U.S.

June 2, 2014

Washington, D.C. has earned the title of “healthiest city in America,” according to the American College of Sports Medicine’s 2014 report. The nation’s capitol edged out Minneapolis-St. Paul this year, which had held the top spot for the last three consecutive years.

ACSM’s Fitness Index assesses the 50 largest metros in the country to create the ranking of the healthiest cities. They take into account such factors as a walk score, obesity and smoking rates, residents' physical activity, and community and environmental indicators, among other factors.

“The AFI data report is a snapshot of the state of health in the community and an evaluation of the infrastructure, community assets and policies that encourage healthy and fit lifestyles,” says Walter Thompson, chair of the AFI’s advisory board.

Here are the cities they ranked in the top 15:

  1. Washington, D.C.
  2. Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn.
  3. Portland, Ore.
  4. Denver, Colo.
  5. San Francisco, Calif.
  6. San Jose, Calif.
  7. Seattle, Wash.
  8. San Diego, Calif.
