Owners Sue Over Home's 'Haunted' Depiction

November 2, 2015

The owners of a home that is depicted as “haunted” in the 2013 film “The Conjuring” is suing the filmmakers for negligence. The 2013 film “The Conjuring” was inspired by the Harrisville, R.I., home, and the filmmakers positioned the story as based on truth. The home’s location was prominently published.

Now, the home owners say they are continuously haunted by horror and film fans showing up on their doorstep to sneak a peek, and some have even broken into their home to get a look.

Norma Sutcliffe says she’s lived in the house until 1987 but since the film’s release in July 2013, she says they’ve been bombarded with fans constantly trying to get in and circling the home at all hours and often with cameras.

“Within days of the July 19. 2013, theatrical release of ‘The Conjuring,’ the Property was inundated by curiosity seekers and trespassers who, at all hours of night and day, come to and onto the Property, approach and seek to enter the house, take photographs and videos, ignore the ‘no trespassing’ signs, fences, and barriers installed,” alleges the couple, who purchased the house in 1987.

The film stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga and centers around paranormal investigators who experienced disturbing events at their Rhode Island farmhouse in 1971.

But the home’s owners say that’s fiction and their house isn’t haunted. Warner Bros. allegedly obtained the rights to the story from the Perron family, a family featured in the film. Sutcliffe says she did not even know about the film’s existence until a friend mentioned it was in production.

Sutcliffe and owner Gerald R. Helfrich have filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros., New Line Productions, and the Safran Co., alleging negligence. They are seeking a state-of-the-art security system as well as monetary compensation for the what they say has been mental, physical and emotional harm as well as damage to their property since the release of the movie.
