Man Arrested for Cyberstalking Agents

December 8, 2015

A Leesville, La., man was arrested this week for sending threatening and sexually explicit text messages to several real estate professionals in the area, reports The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Police say they received several complaints from local real estate professionals who say they had received harassing and sexually explicit texts from a man starting on Nov. 30. The real estate pros say that the man was aware of their vocation and attempted to arrange an appointment to meet in person, reports The Town Talk.

Christopher Cory Ryan, 30, of Leesville, La., has been arrested in connection on charges of sending the alleged messages. He was charged with seven counts of cyberstalking and seven counts of felony stalking. He is being held on a $140,000 bond.

Police are urging any other possible victims to come forward.

The National Association of REALTORS® and local and state associations have been calling on greater safety precautions in real estate in the wake of the murder last year of Arkansas real estate agent Beverly Carter.

“On the one-year anniversary of the tragic death of Beverly Carter, we must recommit ourselves as an industry to the need for safety awareness and practices among real estate agents, colleagues and clients,” Chris Polychron, NAR’s president at the time, said in September. “Unfortunately, like many other jobs that require interacting with the public, selling real estate involves some risk, but we must do everything possible to ensure that future tragedies are prevented. One of the most important things REALTORS® can do to protect themselves is to always meet new clients in their office and introduce them to a co-worker. REALTORS® should keep their phone charged and with them, make sure someone always knows their location, be careful with sharing personal information and always trust their instincts.”
