NAR Legal Announces ‘Don’t Risk It’ Winners

November 4, 2016

At the first annual “Don’t Risk It” awards ceremony, the National Association of REALTORS® recognized the power of video to raise awareness about REALTORS®’ legal and fiduciary duties to clients and customers. The three winners and four honorable mentions were announced Thursday during the Legal Education Seminar at the REALTORS® Conference and Expo in Orlando, Fla.

“The purpose of the awards is to encourage [local and state] associations to invest in resources and create materials for their members,” said NAR General Counsel Katherine Johnson. Johnson was inspired to launch the awards contest after seeing what she called a “humorous,” Hamilton-esque video featuring Washington REALTORS® CEO Steve Francks “rapping about fiduciary duty.” The videos were judged for their creative, technical, educational, and business value. Winners received a trophy and a copy of the new edition of the book Real Estate Brokerage Essentials.

NAR Associate Counsel Jessica Edgerton encouraged state and local association executives and legal counsel to increase their use of video in their member communications. “Research shows that videos can increase data retention, motivate learning, and facilitate critical thinking,” she said. “And keeping it succinct — under five minutes — is best.”
