Deadly Tornadoes Rip Through Midwest, Shredding Homes

Homes and buildings were torn in two, and several residents reportedly became trapped as a series of massive, deadly tornadoes and heavy storms pounded the Midwest this week. Residents in Jefferson City—Missouri’s capital—were left stunned after a tornado ripped through the city late Wednesday night and tore apart building. “It happened so fast,” one homeowner said.
At least eight people have been reported dead so far from at least 95 tornados and storms that have slammed the region since Monday. Heavy storms and flooding could continue into Friday across the Midwest and Southern Plains, weather forecasters warn.
In Jefferson City, a twister cut a three-mile path through the city shortly after 11 p.m. on Wednesday. Police there reported having to rescue at least 20 people who were trapped inside their homes. In Jefferson City, no fatalities have been reported so far in as recovery efforts continue.
“The last 24 hours have been devastating for our community,” the Jefferson City Area Board of REALTORS® posted on its Facebook page Thursday night. “But as expected, the people in the community rally, and we will be stronger moving forward.”
The preliminary assessment from the National Weather Service rated the tornado in Jefferson City as an EF-3, with winds estimated at 160 mph.
“A lot of devastating damage to buildings, but buildings can be replaced,” Mayor Carrie Tergin told CNN. “We are going to work together to get through this.”
More than 150 miles away, in the Golden City area of Barton County, Mo., police have confirmed three deaths from twisters that struck the area. In Oklahoma, severe weather has caused torrential rains and flooding.
The Missouri REALTORS® Association and local boards were quick to post announcements on social media to where real estate professionals could donate funds to those in need.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the unsettled weather Missouri experienced last night,” the Missouri REALTORS® Association posted on Facebook Thursday.
