Online Brands Increase Their Physical Stores

Online retailers are increasing their brick-and-mortar presence—a real estate sector that they once took the blame for shuttering. Digitally native brands operate about 1,700 physical stores, according to an analysis by Kevin Campos, a principal at venture capital firm Fifth Wall, and are expected to open another 850 stores by 2023, according to JLL Research.

Internet shops are becoming more aggressive in ramping up their brick-and-mortar presence, particularly among these businesses, Campos says:

  1. SmileDirect Club: 300 stores (the majority are inside CVS and Walgreens stores)
  2. Tesla: 128 stores
  3. Suitsupply: 125 stores
  4. Warby Parker: 116 stores
  5. Alex and Ani: 104 stores
  6. Kendra Scott: 95 stores
  7. Peloton: 83 stores
