Does Pantone’s 2020 Color Choice Look Familiar?

December 5, 2019

Famed paint firm Pantone has selected “Classic Blue”—a close match to the REALTOR® blue shade, which is Pantone 293 C—as its 2020 color of the year. The choice proves that ocean and sky shades will be a hot hue in home decor in the new year. Pantone describes the color as the “sky at dusk,” “timeless,” “easily relatable,” and “restful.”

The color has been shown on painted walls, rugs, decorative pillow accents, and even kitchen cabinets.

Pantone joins other paint firms in choosing a blue shade for its 2020 top color pick. The paint firm PPG chose “Chinese Porcelain” as its top color pick, a blend of cobalt and muted navy tones. Also, Sherwin Williams named “Naval,” a deep navy blue, as its 2020 color of the year.

Blues offer a bold color pop but tend to be a timeless favorite, Pantone says. The hue can help anchor a space, says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

“The Pantone Color of the Year highlights the relationship between trends in color and what is taking place in our global culture at a moment in time, a color that reflects what individuals feel they need that color can hope to answer,” adds Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. “As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions, designers and brands should feel inspired to use color to engage and connect.”

In 2019, Pantone chose “Living Coral”—a bright orange with gold undertones—as its color of the year.

For 21 years Pantone has named a color of the year, which has proven to be a closely watched guide by designers. Blue is a familiar choice for the company, which has often chosen shades of blue for its top color picks over the years, such as “Cerulean” (its first pick in 2000), “Aqua Sky” (2003), “Blue Turquoise” (2005), “Blue Iris” (2008), and “Serenity” (which was named the color of the year in 2016 along with rose quartz).
