Doctors say that, for most Americans, the seasonal flu poses greater danger than the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19. Still, with many members traveling to National Association of REALTORS® meetings and other gatherings throughout the year, NAR officials have been closely monitoring news on the coronavirus and staying abreast of recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
Read NAR's guidance to REALTORS® on dealing with coronavirus in your business.
"Members' health and safety are NAR’s top priorities," says NAR CEO Bob Goldberg. In light of the CDC issuing a Level 3 Travel Warning for all of China and South Korea, NAR has suspended all association business travel to China and South Korea until further notice. In addition, the CDC has issued a Level 2 Travel Warning for Italy, Iran, and Japan.
March 5 Update: NAR announced today the suspension of non-essential travel to association events—or on behalf of NAR—by staff, volunteers, and others until April 11 or until further notice. Learn more.
Feb. 29 Update: The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has issued Level 3 travel warnings for Italy and Iran. Now, China, South Korea, Italy, and Iran all have Level 3 travel warnings; the CDC recommends that travelers avoid all nonessential travel to these countries.
MIPIM, the international real estate conference that takes place in Cannes, France, each year is being postponed to June 2-5. The conference had been scheduled to open March 10. Organizers sent a notice to participants saying, "We made this decision due to growing concerns related to the coronavirus (Covid-19) and because our priority is the well-being of everyone who attends MIPIM, including you, your colleagues, and our own staff and partners."
Cannes is about 45 miles from the Italian border town of Ventimiglia.
If you have international travel plans, check the CDC's Traveler's Health Notices for the latest guidance and recommendations.
If you've visited China or South Korea in the past 14 days; have been in close contact with someone who has traveled to China or South Korea in the past 14 days; or had close contact with a person confirmed to have, or being evaluated for, the COVID-19 (formally known as Novel Coronavirus) infection — or if you have concerns about the coronavirus — please review the FAQs published by the CDC and other information that has been published by public health agencies.
In addition, all members should take preventive actions to help prevent the spread of illnesses, including coronavirus and the seasonal flu:
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water aren’t available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, or cough or sneeze into your sleeve.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
NAR is working on a plan to ensure continuity of business if conditions worsen.
