Hill Rally 1996

June 1, 1996

More than 1,000 REALTORS® hit congressional offices on Capitol Hill at a rally April 30 during the NAR Midyear Business Meetings in Washington, D.C., to deliver the real estate message on preserving the mortgage interest deduction and protecting private property from government takings. REALTORS® also lobbied senators and representatives on tax reform, cutting the capital gains tax rate, and protecting FHA.

Before the Hill visit, Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D.,told members they should be proud of how effective their voice is in Congress; and Rep. Jerry Weller, R-Ill., spoke on his bill, H.R. 1708, supported by NAR, that would make FHA an independent, government-owned entity. NAR analysts say the Hill visit was successful: Two days later, six more congressmen signed on as cosponsors of a resolution emphasizing the importance of the mortgage interest deduction.
