Bottle Rockets Away!

What’s July without fireworks? So this month, we’re bringing you an explosive special issue: REALTOR® Magazine’s Top 100 Companies in residential real estate in the United States.

July 1, 2000

Our list--which ranks companies by transaction sides closed in 1999--expands the “Market Leaders” presentation we brought you last July, in which we ranked companies in 11 hot markets around the country. We told you then that we had big plans for our 2000 coverage.

First up is the Top 100 Companies list (page 43). Lists are by their nature controversial. Someone comes in first, someone comes in last, and there’s usually plenty to argue about in between. That’s why we put one of our most seasoned editors--Lucien Salvant, managing editor of special projects--in charge. Lucien ensured that our research for the presentation was comprehensive and first-rate.

Still, we can’t make companies participate in our survey, and some big ones opted out this year--some for good reasons, others for reasons they wouldn’t share with us. We hope that in the future, they’ll find value in participating.

Why do a list at all? Because REALTOR® Magazine wants to be your definitive source for information about the industry, and that means we have a responsibility to track those leading the pack and explore what’s behind their success. With that in mind, we’ve included profiles of five companies that are doing attention-grabbing things to grow and enhance their profitability.

Whether or not you’re in our Top 100 presentation, think of it as a Roman candle shedding light on how some of the biggest in the business define success. And use the list as a benchmark for your company’s performance.

To balance the coverage on industry giants, our “Bonus for Managers” edition features one-office wonders--profitable small firms that feel they’re sized just right for continuing business success. Readers of our regular edition can find this feature online at (Archives, July 2000 issue).

Next up? At, twice each month, Lucien will be bringing you a “Market Leaders” column that covers the moves of the industry’s leading companies. Big companies certainly don’t have a lock on business innovation. But there’s no denying that their decisions can impact you. Can you afford not to know what they’re thinking?

As always, we appreciate hearing from you about the magazine and Web site. Bottle rockets away!

P.S. Have a happy and safe Independence Day!
