Are We There Yet?

There’s a quote on a wall in my office that reads, “In the long run, men hit only what they aim at.” It’s from Henry David Thoreau, a favorite author, and it’s there to remind me of the importance of setting goals and doing the hard work of keeping them in focus.
In 2001 the REALTOR® Magazine staff set an important goal. We wanted to reshape the magazine—its design and content—into a world-class business publication. We debuted the magazine’s new look and editorial lineup with the November 2002 issue, then followed up by freshening the design and content of the magazine’s extended family—REALTOR® Magazine Online (REALTOR.org/realtormag) and the REALTOR® Magazine Show Daily newspaper, which we publish at the annual Realtors® Conference & Expo. Readers reacted with great enthusiasm to the changes, as did our publishing peers.
Since the redesign, the magazine and its family of publications have won nearly 50 publishing awards, including some top honors from the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) and the Society of National Association Publications (SNAP).
This summer, in particular, we received two very special accolades. REALTOR® Magazine was named one of the top 10 business publications in the country by ASBPE from a field of more than 140 publications, including BusinessWeek, CIO, and Variety magazines. While we were all still dizzy from the news of this honor, we learned that we’d won our first international award, a bronze medal from Trade, Association, and Business Publications International for our popular March 2004 list issue. The Tabbies, as this new award program is called, drew nearly 300 entries from North America, Europe, and Asia.
These two awards, coming back-to-back, would seem to indicate we’ve reached our goal of making REALTOR® Magazine a world-class business publication, at least in the eyes of our peers.
But as proud as the publications staff is of these latest awards, we know that this kind of peer recognition is icing; the cake is what you, our readers, think of us.
