Get committed to riding out the downturn.

January 1, 2009

As I write this column, I'm just back from the 2008 REALTORS® Conference & Expo in Orlando. Approximately 20,000 REALTORS®, industry professionals, and invited guests turned out for the event. And while the Florida weather was warm and sunny, I didn't see many NAR members hanging out by the pool. Instead they packed the Expo and filled the education sessions, looking for products and ideas to help them thrive, not just survive, in these difficult economic times.

As I talked to REALTORS® in Orlando, I was struck by how many of those I spoke with were upbeat about the future of the nation's economy as well as their business. Most acknowledged that sales weren't that great in 2008, but all were committed to riding out this latest market cycle with determination, creativity, and a positive attitude.

In that spirit, REALTOR® magazine is kicking off the year with a "2009 Guide to Doing Business," a feature that will help you adjust your business model to the economic and real estate realities experts think lie ahead. We're also bringing you an exclusive excerpt from Keller Williams founder Gary Keller's new book, Shift: How Top Real Estate Agents Tackle Tough Times. In it, he shares insights on how to align your business tactics to new market conditions.

In March, we'll kick off a six-month video series at the magazine's Web site featuring interviews with some of real estate's most successful practitioners. We're calling this our "Master Series." In April, we'll once again devote the entire magazine to tips that can help you be more successful in all aspects of your business: prospecting, marketing, financial planning, negotiating, and risk reduction. You've always told us that our "list issue" is a favorite.

And if you're involved in commercial real estate, you'll want to take special note of a new addition to the magazine's coverage—a special section devoted to commercial real estate topics and trends. We'll run this every month in 2009 as a way to better serve the more than 120,000 members of NAR who are engaged in at least some commercial transactions.

For the full range of what the NATIONAL ASSOCIATON OF REALTORS® has to offer to help you weather tough economic times, visit REALTOR.org and type "NAR Helps You" into the search box. The first link on the search results page will bring you to a list of resources on everything from the latest FHA rules to guidance on short sales.

All of us at REALTOR® magazine wish you a very successful New Year, and we'll be here in 2009, doing our part to help you make it one.
