Take Pride in Your Power

Pamela Geurds Kabati highlights the many ways to experience the #PowerofR.

May 2, 2014

Do you know how powerful you are? As a member of the National Association of REALTORS®, you stand shoulder to shoulder with more than 1 million REALTORS® who help people achieve the American dream of property ownership. You represent a 106-year tradition of looking out for the best interests of America’s property owners. You adhere to a strict code of ethics in your business. In your community, your state, and your region, you are part of the chorus of NAR members who help make the REALTOR® organization The Voice for Real Estate®.

Are you feeling proud? I hope so. For nearly 25 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with REALTORS® to help them amplify their role as The Voice for Real Estate®. The latest effort on this front is our Power of R campaign.

What is the Power of R? It’s all of you working together to ensure that public policies favor home ownership and real estate investment; maintain NAR’s leadership role in real estate data and information; and demonstrate the value REALTORS® bring to the real estate transaction and to their communities.

The thousands of REALTORS® who are attending the REALTOR® Party Convention and Trade Expo in Washington, D.C., this May are an example of the Power of R in action. You can keep up with all the latest happenings from the REALTOR® Party Convention at live.blogs.realtor.org. Learn more about the Power of R and show your pride by visiting realtor.org/powerofr, and download one of the customizable banners to use on your Facebook page.

Here are some things you may not know about the Power of R:

  • NAR’s media communications efforts in 2013 garnered more than 93 billion impressions in the mainstream media with a publicity value of approximately $53 million.  That’s what NAR would have had to spend to receive the same level of media exposure through paid advertising.
  • The REALTOR® organization’s social media footprint—the amount of engagement it receives across social media channels—is 1.4 million people, up 75 percent from a year ago and stronger than that of any other real estate–related organization.
  • NAR’s weekly radio show, Real Estate Today, is heard on more than 200 stations in all 50 states and has a monthly listenership of 7.5 million people.

If that’s not enough to get your REALTOR® pride going, I’d urge you to take a look at the latest NAR Annual Report. There you can get an even broader sense of the Power of R.

I hope you will be part of the Power of R and take pride in that power every day. Share your stories on Facebook and Twitter using #PowerofR. Or reach out to REALTOR® Magazine senior editor Graham Wood (gwood@realtors.org), who’s writing incredible Power of R stories for the magazine’s back page and the website. Check out the latest stories whenever you need some inspiration or a reminder of how powerful you are.
