REALTORS® Step Up Quickly With Relief for Hurricane Katrina Victims
October 1, 2005
Less than 72 hours after Hurricane Katrina swept through the U.S. Gulf coast, REALTORS® around the country rallied to an appeal for assistance by NAR President Al Mansell.
On Aug. 31—two days after Katrina ravaged parts of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi—NAR announced a donation of more than $1.1 million to relief funds set up by the three states’ associations. By the end of Labor Day weekend, REALTORS® had contributed an additional $1 million to the REALTORS® Relief Foundation. But Mansell says more is needed.
“As phenomenal as REALTORS® have been, there remains desperate need for assistance,” says Mansell. “Your contribution will have a huge impact on the lives of people facing tremendous challenges.”
NAR launched its first national relief effort after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Since then, it has raised funds to assist victims of hurricanes and the Indian Ocean tsunami. Some $10 million in assistance has now flowed through the Foundation.
