NAR: A Great Investment in You

What's in it for you? Here are the top five values of being a member of the REALTOR® organization.

August 1, 2008

I’ve been a member of the REALTOR® organization for more than 30 years. I joined in order to learn and gain a competitive edge. Thirty years later, I’m a top producer—and, still today, my success is due in large part to my membership. Here, to me, are the top five values of this organization.

No. 5: Information you can’t get anywhere else.

The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® tracks data on 150 local housing markets across the nation and produces dozens of professional research reports to give you insights on what home buyers and sellers want. Our commercial outlook and reports provide the latest information on the office, retail, industrial, and hotel sectors. In fact, no matter what your specialty, as a REALTOR®, you have the information you need to reach new clients and exceed their expectations. More: REALTOR.org/research

No. 4: Business building ideas.

NAR’s conferences offer a unique opportunity to network with industry leaders and colleagues and gain skills that’ll lead to more business. REALTOR® University now offers more than 300 hours of online education. And there are hundreds of live programs each year offered by NAR and its affiliates. Whatever your specialty—from auctions to transitional land sales—there’s something for you. More: REALTOR.org/meetings and REALTOR.org/education

No. 3: A voice at all levels of government.

For 100 years, we have advocated for laws and policies that keep real estate investment strong and help our members in their businesses. Our REALTORS® Political Action Committee is the most powerful PAC in the nation. That, combined with strong grassroots participation, means that if a law or policy is affecting you, NAR has the strength and resources to address it at the highest levels of government. No. 2: Money in your pocket.

Your membership can easily save you more than you pay in annual dues, thanks to the group-buying discounts and value-added offers available through REALTOR Benefits®, a program that costs you nothing. Want concrete examples? Dell Computers offers a great discount to all REALTORS®. Chase gives REALTORS® who sign up for their platinum Visa card a $64 credit on their first use of the card. FedEx saves REALTORS® up to 21 percent on shipping. And, through our partnership with Lowe’s, REALTORS® can send customized direct mail and discount coupons to clients free of charge. No. 1: A name that stands apart.

Ninety-two years ago, our organization adopted the term “REALTOR” so that consumers wouldn’t confuse us with nonmembers who weren’t bound by a code of ethics. Today, we’re still bound by a code—and by the requirement to refresh our knowledge of the code every four years. And we let consumers know about our commitment to ethical standards through our award-winning Public Awareness Campaign. More: REALTOR.org/ethics and REALTOR.org/awarenesscampaign

Thank you for making the choice to join NAR. Your membership makes our industry stronger. And I hope you find, as I have, that your membership is also a valuable investment in yourself!

Update: The Lowe’s Program for REALTORS® is no longer available through the REALTOR Benefits® Program. For questions, please call NAR’s REALTOR Benefits® Help Line at 800-627-5233.
