When it comes to the future of our industry, we all play an important role.

Are we going to set the future course for our industry—or let others decide the path for us?
The answer is that we’re going to set the course. And when I say we, I don’t mean the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®—I mean you and me. We’ll do it not just for the benefit of ourselves and our industry but for all those who cherish this central principle, found in the preamble to our Code of Ethics: “Under all is the land. Upon its wise utilization and widely allocated ownership depends the survival and growth of free institutions and of our civilization.”
Upholding that principle is what the REALTOR® Party is all about. It’s why NAR has greatly expanded its advocacy capabilities. Our association now offers a wide array of campaign- and community-building services to state and local associations, and we have already seen the fruits of our efforts.
In May, we supported Texas REALTORS® in statewide primary elections, helping a large majority of association-endorsed candidates win their primary races. Last November, we helped assure a victory for REALTOR® Jim Johnston in his race for the Pocatello, Idaho, city council. In New York, we helped achieve a property-tax cap. In each of these victories—and in many others—we supported campaigns that you deemed important to the well-being of your state or local market area.

As we approach the Nov. 6 elections, we’re amplifying our voice. In July, NAR launched a multiyear e-mail campaign, reaching more than 75 million home owners and 5 million renters who aspire to be home owners. The e-mails work in tandem with our Public Advocacy Campaign ads and our online and broadcast vehicles, HouseLogic.com and the Real Estate Today radio show, to educate consumers about the financial and social benefits of home ownership. By forging this relationship with consumers now, we become a much more potent force on federal housing policy issues in the future.
And public policy is only one of the areas in which we’re looking ahead. In August, NAR embarked on a journey that will get thousands of us talking about the future. Through a program called REThink, we’re looking at the technological, environmental, economic, demographic, and political forces that are shaping our business. At workshops around the country, NAR members will be asked to reflect on several future scenarios and their potential impact on our industry. Those who aren’t attending a workshop can share their thoughts online. It’s exciting because it gets a huge number of us participating in what was once a closed-door committee process.
I’ve been happily married to my wife Matey for 40 years. In that time, I’ve learned a few things about how to make a relationship work. Being a good listener is at the top of the list.
