Own Your Vacation
A break from business is good for business, says NAR President John Smaby.
July - August
Summer is here, but real estate markets never rest. How can REALTORS® navigate vacation time while making sure clients' needs are met?
Real estate is a lifestyle. REALTORS® work hard serving their communities day in and day out. However, everyone needs downtime and summer can be a great opportunity to get away. It's not easy to take a break from our businesses, but from time to time, we all need a break. Capitalize on technology tools and lean on your team—or partner with someone in your office to make sure clients' needs are covered.
Are you ever able to truly have down time?
The beauty of today's technology is that I can work in the middle of North Star Lake in Minnesota on my pontoon boat 200 miles north of Minneapolis. My father bought a cabin there in 1960 with his real estate partner, and it became our family getaway. With association and client commitments, it's hard to disconnect, but even a quick weekend away helps me recharge and reenergize. Think about it: We help families find the home where they'll make lasting memories. Let's get out there and make our own memories with friends and family!
This year, more often than not, you're traveling on official NAR business. You were recently in Serbia for a summit with central and eastern European real estate leaders. What was the mission of that meeting?
The National Association of REALTORS® delegation met with leadership from 13 countries, including our global alliance partners from Hungary, Romania, Greece, and Serbia. I found it heartwarming to focus on our common passion for this industry. NAR forms alliances with real estate associations worldwide whose members subscribe to a code of ethics. The purpose of the summit was to share information about the U.S. real estate industry and our association's strategic priorities, with a particular focus on advocacy. REALTORS® can learn and benefit from global collaboration. After all, in today's connected work, your next transaction may come from an ocean away.
