'You've Reached My Office. Ignore the Screaming Kids'

Futurists talk about technology's freeing us from the confines of a corporate office---but at least one real estate pro has a markedly different perspective.

Home offices aren't for everyone.

"We cater to small, entrepreneurial businesses," says Wendy Habisohn, a property manager and director of operations with Northbrook, Ill.--based Joseph Real Estate Services Ltd., a commercial and industrial management, leasing, and brokerage company. Recently, Habisohn has helped a lot of small-business owners move out of their home office and into single-person office spaces.

"People complain about the distractions of working at home---and about how they never get away from the job," she says. "One client, an architect, talked about the difficulty of contractors coming to his home all day."

Home offices don't always serve family relationships well, either. "Is your spouse your spouse or your assistant? Sometimes it feels like the latter when calls are coming in at 5 a.m.," Habisohn says. "People think they're calling your office, so it's open season."
