Don't You Wish 'Simple' Was 'Easy'?

If you're trying to achieve a goal, the steps along the way may be simple enough, but the road you're traveling as a whole is never easy.

I was having a conversation with someone recently about Internet marketing and how the Web has changed the game for so many businesses, and I said, “Look, it’s so simple — but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.”

Isn’t that true for you? Think about anything that you want to accomplish in your life, whether it’s getting in better shape or selling more houses. Chances are that the steps to get there are extremely simple, but the road as a whole is hard to travel.

To get in shape, you have to say yes to some foods and no to others and exercise a few times a week. Simple, right?

If you want to sell more houses this year, you can hire a coach, create more Internet leads, hit the phones hard every day, accept rejection and learn to be OK with hearing “no,” become comfortable being uncomfortable, do a minimum of two open houses every weekend, and protect your calendar so you can focus on your best uses of time every day. Simple, right?

Hopefully, you’re starting to see my point. Just because the individual tasks seem simple doesn’t mean it’s easy to execute the plan when you put them all together. There’s something about the process, when we view it in its entirety, that becomes scary or overwhelming.

So how do you keep from feeling frustrated and failing to follow through on what you know you really want? Here are a few steps I follow, and I think they will help you as well.

  1. Make sure what you think you want is what you really want. Many times our lack of motivation to do something is due to the fact that we don’t actually want to do it — but feel like we should. If you are trying to lose weight or to make more money because you think that’s what others expect of you, then it will never work.
  2. Realize that you won’t achieve your ultimate goal in a day. Recently, I was on a run and rolled my ankle over a small rock. To say I was frustrated is an understatement. It drove me nuts that I couldn’t run for a few weeks. When I visited the doctor, he told me everything I needed to do to heal, and I followed his orders every day. What frustrated me, though, is that while I did what he said, it’s not like I woke up the next day and could start running again. I had to come to the conclusion that I was working towards something that was going to take time — but it would be worth it if I stayed the course. There was literally nothing I could do to be healed in a day. Sometimes we have to view the goals that we have in our lives and business in the same manner. You are working towards something, whether that be top-producer status or something else, and there is nothing you can do today that will make you No. 1 in your office by tomorrow. But if you are consistent, it will happen.
  3. Surround yourself with people who support your goals. I wrote an article recently for REALTOR® Magazine about eliminating the “mosquitoes” in your life. You should check it out because it applies to this point, too. When I started in real estate and before I became a speaker, I wanted it to work out so bad. I took a real risk leaving my steady job. Before making the leap, I made my wife promise that I could confide in her without fear of hearing “I told you so.” Basically, I didn’t want her to use my first bad day against me to prove that I needed to go back and get “a real job.” I needed to be surrounded by people who shared my goals and believed in me — not people who waited until I was down to tell me what a loser I was and that I would never make it. Real estate is an emotional roller coaster with many ups and downs, and if you aren’t surrounded by people that support you no matter what, then you will never make it.
  4. Tell people you trust what your goals are so you can be held accountable. There is something about telling others what you want that makes it more real. Sometimes we are more comfortable disappointing ourselves than others. While that is sad — and a story for another day — it is still true, so you might as well leverage it.
