6 Ways to Save Money Now on Technology

To get the biggest bang for the bucks you've invested in cell phones and other technology, here are six belt tightening--and revenue-generating--ideas that you can act on easily and immediately.
- Ask your cellular service provider if you pay for both incoming and outgoing calls on your mobile phone. If so, question whether you can be reimbursed for incoming calls that were a mistake. These amounts add up over time.
- Give your cellular phone number only to people who really need to have it for business or personal reasons. Paying for incoming calls can be an unnecessary expense. Have others contact you by pager so you can control calls.
- Use a timer to record how long you've been speaking long distance. Awareness helps reduce long-distance costs. Many phones now record the length of calls.
- Host an online news group, discussion group, or chat on real estate or another subject you know a lot about. This will attract more people to your Web site. Resist the temptation to quickly obtain the latest products and upgrades. They often have glitches that the maker needs to work out before releasing the second generation.
- When you upgrade your modem, upgrade substantially. But wait to upgrade if the jump in speed isn't significant enough. A fast modem saves time and long-distance charges.
